Rocketry Display - Ashlawn School Rugby, July 10th PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday, 10th July, I will be running a static display and a limited mid-power launch at a Science and Engineering exhibition at the Ashlawn School, in Rugby, and would be very pleased to have some support from any club members who are available between 10 am and 2 pm.  This is quite a prestigious event for us to be invited to attend and any support or rockets to borrow for the day would be well received.  We should be closing the exhibition with our rocket launch and I intend to fly at least 6 low to mid power depending on the weather.

The club’s junior section has had a relatively quiet start to the year with a couple of demonstration launches to carry out for some of our school visitors.  Visits from local PROBUS groups have been welcomed with our usual V2 launches using our special effects motors and those seem to have gone down well!  Combined with a couple of workshops for Primary schools and we seemed to have settled into a routine.  Work on the entry for UKAYRoC was on hold, pending arrival of some deliveries from our supplier, but that could soon be tidied up.  The calm wasn’t to last, though, and on the Monday after half term it all went rather silly.

It started with a surprise phone call from a desperate young lady and who were we to shy away from a damsel in distress?  It would seem that a television company had been let down at the last minute.  She had been given our contact details and was asking for our help.  We, of course, said “Yes”, and then it all went rather crazy.  What she actually needed was someone to build a rocket and fly it.  OK – that’s what we are good at.  “Actually – it’s two rockets”.  OK – we can do that – ish!  “And - ah - we want them ready in seven days!”  WHAT!!!!!!  That’s when it became REALLY silly.

I know that it's late but this Sunday's launch is on and the weather is looking cool but reasonably dry.  The ground is sticky but walkable but boots are the order of the day.  Start time is as normal, at 10.30 ish and wrap up and take down at 17.00.  The Peacock is open for a final debrief over a foaming glass and there are some major stories to relate over the happenings of the last few weeks.

Opening Session - Sunday 16th PDF Print E-mail

OK - we've had our first opening session of the new year and it was a successful if rather sparcely attended one.  It would have been nice to have had a couple more in the workshop but that said - a lot of fat was chewed!!  We had chance to prove the usefullness of the new laser cutter and turned out a couple of sets of centering rings and bulkheads for Charles W to go in his new Blue tube upscale.  Should go well!  I managed to get a few avionics bay plates made up for the Level 3 build and after some serious discussion decided to improve the recovery chances of "The Biggie", by investing in some 7.5" blue tube to replace the proposed PML phenolic base.  That, with the carbon honeycomb fins, should be pretty well sorted.

The next meeting will be in February, and fingers crossed for weather, should be on the usual third Sunday.  I will get the finalised dates up on the flying dates tab ASAP.

OK it's that time again - the start of a New Year.  Welcome to 2010 and also to the new BK website.  Pretty cool ain't it?  My thanks to Malcolm for sorting it all out and giving us a tidy new look.  Try to make the most of it and it can only get better.  You will probably have noticed things like the weather forecast on the launch site pages and odds and ends like that.  Hopefully we will always get those ones with the nice round orangey fireball-shaped thing - I think they refer to it as the SUN!

I'd like to get the galleries up and running again, so if you have any particularly nice rocketry pictures you'd like to get uploaded you can email them to me at the address on the contacts page and I will sort them out.  Give me some details of what it's about and I'll do a little write-up to go with it.

With any luck, and with your continued support, this year will see BK able to get off the ground - in many ways!!!
