16/07/2002 - Inkeberrow First School Fete Launch Site

Inkeberrow First School was 150 years old the other week and to celebrate the school held a fete. Dave Beeton has done a couple of rocket workshops at the school in the past and was asked if he would like to put on a static and flying display. Dave volunteered the services of the club. This is the story of our day. Saturday the 6th of July was a sunny day with little wind. Ray Hancox and Richard Chowns were first on site followed by myself and Dave. We moved the cars round to the school playing field and were allocated a pitch for our display. We set up Dave's Gazebo and the display of rockets etc in the nick of time as the fete opened just as we finished! The Fete was very busy with lots going on - school children country dancing, Morris men, pony rides and all the other usual school fete activities. We were kept busy answering questions from kids and parents alike. The organizers had booked our flying display as the penultimate event at 16.15, before the raffle so from around 14.30 we started setting up the launch area and prepping rockets. The launch site was a farmer's field adjoining the playing fields. This proved excellent as the fence between the two fields made for easy crowd control. We also used radios to communicate between the RSO and the fetes announcer. Our activities in the field, in addition to adverts from the fetes announcer, started to attract attention from the attendee's and by 16.15 we had a good crowd lined up along the fence. At 16.15 Dave who was RSO for the main part of the launch contacted the announcer and gave details of the vehicles to be launched, which were relayed, to the crowd by the announcer over the PA. Then with the RSO's permission the announcer gave the countdowns over the PA. The first and second launch sessions consisted of Richards Gamma Ray, Rays Gold Strike my Falcon and then Rays Polaris and my Nike Smoke. All the rockets were clapped and there were lots of ooh's and ah's from the onlookers. The third launch session was "MARS attacks" i.e. three flying saucers all lifting of at once The crowd really enjoyed this! Then came the finale Dave's Eliminator on an Aerotech F motor. As Dave was launching he handed over RSO duty to me. I gave the launch details to the announcer who briefed the crowd and yes you guessed it no circuit light from the launch control equipment. So while Dave sorted out the Aerotech copperhead igniter I gave a brief description of what was going on to the crowd. After a little fiddling Dave got a circuit indication and we were on again. I checked the range and the announcer counted down. After a slight hesitation the motor burst into life and the Eliminator was airborne, the crowd gasped, cheered and clapped. The rocket deployed its chute and the location beeper could be clearly heard, although it was not needed, as the rocket was easily visible in the field. The crowd gave us a final clap of appreciation and we went off to retrieve our rockets while the raffle was being drawn. It was a good fun day and we and the attendee's enjoyed flying the rockets. As we were packing up the organizers expressed their thanks for both the static and flying display. The Black Knights continued their recent raffle successes, see UKRA 2002 reports, Ray won a prize.
